When I was growing up in these mountains, I was always taught that culture was someplace else, and that when the time came, I’d be sent off to get some. Now everybody here realizes that we don’t have to go anyplace else to “get culture” — we’ve got our own, and we’ve had it all along.

I'm rather embarrassed--nattering on about red pistachio dye. Yikes.

I actually thought it was kind of cute to think of a young reader making notes with red pistachio dye--was that some sort of pen?

Oh, no, just stains from my fingers. So glad they don't put that dye on the nuts anymore. . .

Oh duh. That's right, they used to dye the shells red, didn't they? I guess you were a pistachio fan in your youth?
