Once Upon A Challenge

My selections for Carl's Once Upon a Time Challenge:

Juan Rulfo's Pedro Paramo (fantasy)

Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus (folklore)

David Mitchell's translation of Gilgamesh (mythology)

Susanna Clarke's Ladies of Grace Adieu (fairy tale)

and, per Carl's suggestion, Midsummer Night's Dream to conclude the challenge in June.

  4. Just lost this comment. Trying again. I've never heard of Pedro Paramo before, but it sounds excellent. Have heard great reviews on Ladies of Grace Adieu. I enjoyed Dr. Faustus, hardly remember anything about Gilgamesh, and love Midsummer Night's Dream.

    Great list!

Great picture--very Spring-y!! I'd like to read the Susanna Clarke book, too. I asked for suggestions for fantasy reads, and now I think I am rather heavy on one sort of book--haven't a clue about the other categories. I would like to read a Midsummer's Night Dream though!

  6. Looks like you have some wonderful reading ahead of you! I almost chose Ladies of Grace Adieu, but I've been wanting to pick up a Mercedes Lackey book for awhile now. My husband really liked Clarke's book though. Good luck!

I'm putting Gilgamesh on my list too. Love the backdrop you chose for the book photo!

Ooh I never would have thought of Pedro Paramo for the Fantasy challenge but I can see that! It's an incredible story. I know there's a film version of it but I don't think it's translated.

Great list and terrific photo! If possible, I suggest reading Pedro Paramo in one sitting. It's an unforgetable book. I remember reading that Gabriel Garcia Marquez honored Juan Rulfo by learning the novel by heart. (I must have read that on one of the book flaps or back page) Gilgamesh is awesome as well, and the Mitchell translation is very well done. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on both.

I'm also reading Ladies of Grace Adieu for the challenge. Looking forward to finally getting to that one.

I've picked up The Ladies of Grace Adieu numerous times in the book store, but have never actually bought it. It seems quite a few people are reading it for this challenge - I look forward to hearing what everyone thinks of it.

Doctor Faustus is one of my favourite plays! I hope you enjoy it!!

  12. Not only is this a wonderful pile of books, but it is a beautiful PHOTO of them!
At first I thought.... "Uh -huh? She is going to READ the Complete Works of Bill?"
But then I saw that you are focusing on Midsummer.
    There!
    Now I don't HATE you!
I thought... Oh, if she can read ALL of Bill.... plus all this other stuff... then I must hate her.
So I only hated you for about three seconds!

  15. Unfortunately, I've only heard of A Midsummer's Night Dream from your list. But, I do look forward to sharing thoughts as we complete this challenge! By the way, I think the picture of you in the box at the top is just lovely.

  16. This must be the third or fourth time I've seen the Clarke book up for the challenge. I suppose that means I have to read it (isn't that how it works with b'philes?).

And, I think your picture of your stack is great. Maybe I'll do one of mine at the end (since there's a chance I'll be adding a few more).

A bang, not a whimper

Two months into L.'s retirement, and I'm finished with the stockpiling of books. No more book purchases! Or at least, no purcha...
