A Thursday Thirteen

Danielle posted a Thursday Thirteen tonight on the mysteries she'd like to read this year, which has prompted me to list the 13 new books I'm most anticipating in 2009.

At the top of the list:

Lorrie Moore's A Gate at the Stairs.

It won't be published until September, though, when two others I'm eager to read come out:

Anne Tyler's Noah's Compass

and

Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood.

By the time my book-buying moratorium ends in May, the following will be available:

Robert Boswell's Heyday of the Insensitive Bastards

A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book

Margaret Drabble's The Pattern in the Carpet (a UK publishing date)

Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall (a UK publishing date)

Garald Kolpan's Etta: A Novel

Brad Gooch's bio Flannery: A Life of Flannery O'Connor

and

Reif Larsen's Selected Works of T.S. Spivet

Chimananda Ngozi Adichie's The Thing Around Your Neck comes out in June, Kazuo Ishiguro's Nocturnes comes out in the UK in the spring and the US in the fall, and a new Michael Cunningham is due at some point during the year.

What new books are you most excited about this year?

  1. I'm completely ignorant lately of any new books that are coming out, though I do want to get the Ishiguro (I think it is short stories?). Margaret Atwood has a new one? I hope it is a novel. I guess I need to look the rest up. Where do you get your new book news?

  2. I'm excited about the Byatt, Drabble and Atwood as well. There are actually so many; I lose track because I look through all the new publishers catalogues for work. That's why I keep a notebook in my desk drawer at work -- it's quite loaded down with titles!

  3. That is some list--wow! Atwood, Byatt, Drabble, Ishiguro, Moore, and Tyler. This is shaping up to be some year for reading. Curious about the rest, too. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I'd love to have the catalogues to look through. I've been finding all the dates from other blogs and message boards. There's a 600 plus title list at overbooked.org, but most of the big names I'm most excited over aren't on it yet.

I'm really excited about all the Australian books due out in 2009 especially new books from Cate Kennedy, David Malouf!, M.J. Hyland, Peter Temple, Sonya Hartnett, Thomas Keneally and Markus Zusak. Most of all I'm excited about Malouf, he's one of Australi's greatest writers and this will be his first novel in a while.

  6. I've not read Malouf, but the library has several of his books and I own his novel about Ovid. Is there one title in particular I should start with, Evie?
