Here's good news:
After years of bemoaning the decline of a literary culture in the United States, the National Endowment for the Arts says in a report that it now believes a quarter-century of precipitous decline in fiction reading has reversed.

ReplyDeleteI saw this the other day and wasn't sure what to make of it. Any uptick in reading is good news, but just what is the cause???? Can we figure it out and do more of it?
ReplyDeleteI wonder if a weak economy makes more people stay home and finish the books on their shelves or go to the library instead of going out.

ReplyDeleteC.B., I honest don't know. Many people come to the library for the free videos and dvds and completely ignore the books.
SFP, you can say that again! Our highest circulating collections at my library are dvds and cds. But the books still go out.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it's a change in the devaluation of intelligence? Smart is once again sexy? Who knows, but it's good to hear reading is on an upswing!
